Chapter 16 Respiratory Physiology Flashcards
What is the primary function of the lungs
- Ventilation
- Gas exchange
- Oxygen utilization
What is the structure of the Lungs
Trachea –> Bronchus –> Bronchioles –> alveoli
What are the 2 types of alveoli cells
Type 1 and Type 2
What is the function of Type 2 alveolar cells
Create Surfactant for the lungs
What is the function of Type 1 alveolar cells
Gas exchange within epithelial tissue
What is the conducting zone
Helps warm and moisten air, also helps clean the air by trapping molecules and having macrophages within the bronchi
What are the physical properties of the lungs
Stretch, elasticity, and surface tension provided by surfactant
What is the Law of Laplace
Whenever you have pressure in an alveoli the surface tension matches
What is Surfactant
Mixture of phospholipids, proteins, and water. Helps contribute to the elastic properties
What are the Pulmonary Disorders
Restrictive - Vital capacity is reduce, expiration is normal
Obstructive - Vital capacity is normal, expiration is reduced
Both - Both vital capacity and expiration are reduced
