Chapter 16 Key notes Flashcards

1
Q

A method of loading hose on a vehicle that results in a hose appearance that resembles accordion sections. What is this called and how is it achieved?

A

This is an accordion hose load. It is achieved by standing the hose on its edge and laying it side to side in the hose bed.

Explain combination hose load.

A

a hose loading method used when one long hose line is needed; the end of the last length of a hose in the one bed of a split hose bed is coupled to the beginning of the first length of hose in the opposite bed.

Q

What is a Dutchman?

A

A short fold placed in a hose when loading the hose into the hose bed; the fold keeps the host properly oriented and prevents the coupling from turning into the hose bed.

10
Q

Describe forward hose lay?

A

The apparatus stops near the tire hydrant, and a fire fighter steps off the apparatus and secures the hose around the fire hydrant. Once the hose is secured, the apparatus proceeds to the fire. As the apparatus moves forward, a length of supply hose unfolds from the apparatus and onto the ground.

20
Q

What are three benefits of flat hose load?

A

It minimizes wear and tear on the hose from the movement and vibration of the vehicle, can be used for any size of attack or supply hose and can be used with single or split hose beds.

21
Q

Describe a horseshoe hose load

A

The horseshow hose load is accomplished by placing the hose on its edge and positioning it around the perimeter of the hose bed in a U shape.

22
Q

What is a major advantage of the horseshoe hose load?

A

It contains fewer sharp bends than the other hose loads.

23
Q

What hose cannot be used for horseshoe hose load and why?

A

A LDH cannot be used for horseshoe hose load because the hose tends to fall over when it stands on its edge.

24
Q

What is the advantage of accordion hose load

A

The load is easy to implement and makes the hose easy to carry.

25
Q

What is the disadvantage of accordion hose load?

A

Hose experience more wear and not recommended for LDH.

26
Q

What is a split hose bed?

A

A hose bed that is divided into two or more sections.

27
Q

What are 4 benefits of a split hose bed?

A

One compartment can hold a hose with a male coupling and the other with a female coupling on top, two parallel hose lines can be laid at the same time, can store hoses of different sizes and all the hose from both sides can be laid out as a single hose line.

28
Q

What is a combination hose load?

A

When a hose from a split hose bed is attached to the end of the last length of hose in the opposite bed to make a long hose.

29
Q

What is the benefit of a dutchman fold?

A

It prevents the coupling from turning and becoming stuck as the hose is laid out.

30
Q

What is the purpose of a supply hose?

A

It is used to deliver as much water as possible over a short distance.

31
Q

What is a working hose drag?

A

It is used to deploy hos from a hose bed and advance the hose line over a relatively short distance to the desired location. Several firefighters may be required.

32
Q

When is a shoulder carry used?

A

It is used to transport full lengths of hose over a longer distance.

33
Q

When is a standpipe system used?

A

It is used to provide a water supply for attack lines that will be operated inside the building. The firefighters inside the building depend on the firefighters outside the building to supply the water.

34
Q

What are the two types of standpipe systems?

A

Dry - depends on fire department for all of the water, Wet - has a built in water supply but the FDC is provided to deliver a higher flow or boost pressure.

35
Q

What is the purpose of a preconnected attack line?

A

The preconnected length of hose and nozzle allow for immediate use.

36
Q

What is a trash line?

A

A short preconnected line that can be used when the apparatus can get close to the fire, such as a vehicle fire or a dumpster fire

37
Q

What do you NOT use a booster hose for?

A

It should not be used for structural or vehicle fires.

38
Q

What is the purpose of a minuteman hose load?

A

It allows a single fire fighter to flake out, or drop, one fold or loop of hose at a time from the shoulder, as they advance towards the fire.

39
Q

What is a preconnected flat hose load?

A

Similar to a flat hose load for supply lines except that the female end of the hose link is reconnected to a pump discharge outlet and a nozzle is attached to the male end.

40
Q

What situation is a triple-layer hose load best suited?

A

it is best suited for fire departments that respond to fire in one or two-story single family dwellings with limited personnel.

41
Q

What is a gated Wye or water thief?

A

It attaches to a larger supply line to two smaller attack lines.

42
Q

What are the three different types of hose evolutions?

A

Offensive - going toward the fire, Defensive - moving away from the building or fire, Transitional - combined offensive and defensive

43
Q

What is the friction point of a hose?

A

It is those places along the hose line where the hose is changing directions, turning a corner, going through a doorway or going up or down stairs.

44
Q

How should you position a hose going around a corner?

A

Pull the hose to the outside of the corner to create surplus hose and avoid contact with the inside corner friction point.

45
Q

How to advance an attack line up a stairway

A

Arrange an adequate amount of extra hose close to the bottom of the stairs. Use a shoulder carry with the minuteman hose load. It is difficult to move a charged hose up stairs with water flowing through the nozzle.

46
Q

What is the best way to advance an attack line down a stairway?

A

Move down the stairway feet first, use your feet to feel for the next step.

47
Q

How do you advance an attack line up a ladder?

A

Should be done before the line is charged. The hose line should be placed across your chest with the nozzle draped over your shoulder.

48
Q

What are the two ways to extend a hose line?

A

Disconnect the hose from the attack pump and add the extra hose here or add the extra hose at the discharge end of the attack line.

49
Q

What can you use on a defective section of hose is the hose line cannot be shut down at the fire pump, the fire hydrant or at a control valve?

A

a hose clamp can be temporarily used to stop the flow of water.

50
Q

What are the steps to replacing a damaged section of hose?

A

Shut down or clamp off the damaged hose line, remove the damaged section, replace the damaged section of hose with two new sections will be adequate, restore the water flow
