Chapter 16 Key notes Flashcards
A method of loading hose on a vehicle that results in a hose appearance that resembles accordion sections. What is this called and how is it achieved?
This is an accordion hose load. It is achieved by standing the hose on its edge and laying it side to side in the hose bed.
What is the delivery of water from an attack pump to a handline, which discharges the water on the fire called?
Attack line operations
What are attack line operations?
Delivery of water from an attack pump to a handline, which discharges the water on the fire.
What is a close off nozzle?
A nozzle with a tip that can be separated from the shut-off valvle
Explain combination hose load.
a hose loading method used when one long hose line is needed; the end of the last length of a hose in the one bed of a split hose bed is coupled to the beginning of the first length of hose in the opposite bed.
What is a Dutchman?
A short fold placed in a hose when loading the hose into the hose bed; the fold keeps the host properly oriented and prevents the coupling from turning into the hose bed.
When should a water supply be established?
At the same time as other initial fire-group operations are conducted.
Where can a fire fighter NOT stand during a forward hose lay?
Cannot stand between the hose and the fire hydrant.
What is another name for forward hose lay?
It is also referred to as straight hose lay
Describe forward hose lay?
The apparatus stops near the tire hydrant, and a fire fighter steps off the apparatus and secures the hose around the fire hydrant. Once the hose is secured, the apparatus proceeds to the fire. As the apparatus moves forward, a length of supply hose unfolds from the apparatus and onto the ground.
What minimum size hose can you use for forward hose lay?
65 mm (2 1/2”)
What can you do if the flow pressure is not adequate at he hydrant?
You can use a four way hydrant valve with a water supply pump.
When would a reverse hose lay be beneficial?
Can be used ins areas where sufficient fire hydrants are available and additional companies can assist in establishing a water supply.
What can you do if the wrong end of the hose is on top of the hose bed?
Use a double make or double female adaptor.
What is a split hose lay?
A split hose lay is performed by two pump companies in situations where hose much be laid in two different directions to establish a water supply
What two other types of hose lay would you use with split hose lay?
You would use forward hose lay and reverse hose lay.
Which side is the rear of the hose bed?
The end closest to the tailboard
What are the three basis hose loads are commonly used for loading supply hose?
The flat hose load, the horseshoe hose load and the accordion hose load.
What does LDH stand for?
Large diameter hose.
What are three benefits of flat hose load?
It minimizes wear and tear on the hose from the movement and vibration of the vehicle, can be used for any size of attack or supply hose and can be used with single or split hose beds.
