Chapter 16: Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
what is the function of the autonomic nervous system?
to regulate homeostasis (for example, heart rate, breathing rate, body temp, etc.)
thoraculumbar system (sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system)
in charge of the fight or flight response. increases heart rate, breathing rate, increases blood flow, and sharpens our senses. Located in the lateral horns of the spinal cord T1 to L2
parasympathetic (craniosacral)
rest and digest. increases bodily processes that get us back into homeostasis to prep for another “life crisis.” Located in the lateral horns from S2 to S4.
sympathetic chain ganglia
the ganglia that exit the lumbar thoracic area and line the vertebral column. They extend into the cervical and sacral regions
collateral ganglia
unpaired ganglia located in the abdominopelic cavity
white ramus comminicans
a short connection between a spinal nerve and a sympathetic chain ganglion.
terminal ganglia
ganglia located near the organ innervated or embedded in the wall of the organ.
dual innervation
innervation by both sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions
