the bumps and grooves on the tongue
what are the four types of papillae
filiform: no taste buds and most abundant
vallate: the largest and least numerous. Only about 8-12 along the border between the anterior and posterior part of the tongue.
fungiform: leaf-shaped. in the folds on the side of the tongue. Most sensitive types of taste buds.
foliate: mushroom shaped. Looking like red dots scattered among the filiform. Has taste buds.
