Osteoporosis
causes bones to become brittle, weak, and easily broken.
Osteoporosis should not be coded to
traumatic fractures (s)
spontaneous fracture that occurs in diseased and weakened bones. Minor trauma which wouldn’t usually break a healthy bone (bump)
pathological fracture
a fracture that was reduced but the bone ends did not align properly during the healing process. Usually a malunion is diagnosed during the healing stages and requires surgical treatment
Malunion
failure of the bone ends to align or heal. This condition usually requires a reopening of the fracture site with some type of internal fixation and bone grafting
nonunion
Initial encounter

- any encounter for active treatment, surgical treatment, ER encounter, and evaluation and management for a new physician
“D”
after patient has completed active treatment such as cast change or removal, removal of fixations, med adjustment, follow up
