Chapter 16 Flashcards
When embryos are retained in the the females body
Viviparity
Has a head, mid piece, and tail
Head ripped with acrosome
Sperm
Male copulatory organ
Penis
Contains a series of lobules which contain seminiferous tubules
Testes
External sac of skin and smooth muscle containing testes
Scrotum
Primary reproductive organs of males
Testes
Series of convoluted ducts combining into a comma shaped organ located posterior of each testis
Epididymis
Ducts connect the epididymis with ejaculatory ducts
Ductus deferens
Short ducts formed by the merging of ducts from the seminal vesicles and vas deferens
Ejaculatory ducts
Large tube connecting the urinary bladder with distal end of the penis
Urethra
Sac like glands that empty into the ductus deferens
Seminal vesicles
Gland surrounding the urethra where it exits the bladder
Prostate gland
Pair of small glands laterally on the urethra posterior to the prostate gland
Bulbourethral gland
Composed of a primary oocyte surrounded by a single layer of squamous cells
Primordial follicles
Follicles larger than the primordial and primary oocytes
Primary follicles
These follicles develop a fluid filled cavity called Antrum
Secondary follicles
Large follicles have a well developed central chamber called Antrum
Mature follicles
Glandular tissue that develops from the mature follicles after ovulation
Corpus luteum
Primary reproductive organs of females
Ovaries
Small ducts that open into the body cavity near each of the ovaries
Uterine tubes
Thick muscular organ lies between the uterine tubes and vagina
Uterus
Inferior part of the uterus immediately superior to the vagina
Cervix
Uterine tubes widen into funnel shaped structure that opens into body cavity next to the ovary
(Has feather like projections called fimbriae)
Infundibulum
Tube extends from uterus to outside of the females body
Vagina
Female external genitalia
Vulva
A pad of fatty tissue that is superior to pubic symphysis
Mons pubis
Thick folds of skin on either side of the vaginal opening
Labia majora
Smaller folds of skin that lie beneath the labia majora
Labia minora
Small projection between labia majora below mons pubis
Clitoris
This sac is a pouch formed from the endoderm and mesoderm
Yolk sac
Membrane formed from ectoderm and mesoderm and lines inner surface of amniotic cavity
Amnion
Membrane formed from endoderm and mesoderm gives rise to the urinary bladder
Allantois
Membrane is formed from the mesoderm and the outer cell layer of the blastocyst
Chorion
Occurs when sperm is transferred to the females body
Internal fertilization
