Chapter 16 Flashcards
The memory and performance disruption that results from performing multiple skills or variations of a skill within the context of practice.
Contextual Interference
The variety of movement and context characteristics a person experiences while practicing a skill.
Practice Variability
What is the benefit of variable practice?
A high amount of contextual interference occurs at one extreme, when the practice schedule involves a random arrangement of trials so that all the task variations are performed in each practice session.
The learning benefit resulting from performing multiple skills in a high contextual interference practice schedule (ex: random practice), rather than performing the skills in a low contextual interference schedule (ex: blocked practice).
Contextual Interference Effect
Movements must directly conform to some features of the environmental context to some features of the environmental context.
Regularity Conditions
Other features that have no influence or only an indirect influence on movement characteristics.
Nonregulatory Conditions
The implementation of specific practice conditions that will optimally challenge the person in a way that will enhance skill learning.
Challenge Point Hypothesis
Why does the contextual interference effect occur?
1) Elaboration Hypothesis and
2) Action Plan Reconstruction Hypothesis
During random practice, a person engages in more/ different strategies than if the practices was of blocked schedule.
The Elaboration Hypothesis
Proposed that high amounts of contextual interference benefit learning because the interference requires a person to reconstruct an action plan on the next practice trial for a particular skill variation.
The Action Plan Hypothesis
The view that motor skill learning is influenced by practice condition characteristics, especially the sensory/ perceptual information available, performance context characteristics, and cognitive processes involved.
Specificity of Practice Hypothesis
Demonstrated by basketball players having to shoot from different distances. They were better at the ones they specialize in or do all the time as opposed to the distances that they did not do all the time.
When an expert is more accurate from the regulation distance than from any other distance.
