Chapter 16 Flashcards
T/F Our knowledge of how to treat MSD is better than our ability to describe and identify it.
False; our ability to describe and identify it is better.
What are the three ways to manage goals in MSD (general) ?
1) restore lost function
2) promote use of residual function
3) reduce need for lost function
What are some ways you can promote the use of residual functions?
- use prosthetic devices (AAC, pace board, etc.)
- modifying environment
What are the 6 factors that influence mgmt of tx d/o?
1) medical dx and prognosis.
2) disability and societal limitations
3) environment and communication d/o
4) motivation and needs
5) associated problems
6) health care system - $$
What are the three approaches to mgmt?
1) Medical intervention
2) Prosthetic mgmt
3) Behavioral mgmt
What are some examples of prosthetic mgmt devices?
DAF, pace boards, AAC, palatal lift, amplifier.
What are the two approaches in behavior mgmt?
1) Speaker oriented
2) Communication oriented
What is he goal in the speaker oriented approach?
To improve the speaker and reduce impairment.
ex: oral motor.
other ex: ask pt to SLOW RATE and OVERARTICULATE
What is the communication oriented approach?
Structure the interaction to improve speaking strategies.
Give pt a hierarchy of strategies.
Manipulate environment (avoid noise, ask listener to get closer, etc.)
What are the guidelines for behavioral mgmt?
1) Tx should start early
2) Baseline data is needed
3) Increasing physiological support of subsystems should be the initial focus of tx.
4) Compensation requires that speech becomes conscious.
5) Use principles of motor learning tx.
What are the principles of motor learning for treatment?
Drill, practice, etc.
- Appropriate instruction.
- Pt’s need to discover what works for them.
- Appropriate feedback.
- Practice tasks that are relevant to speech.
- Begin w/ most advanced skills that the pt has demonstrated in the assessment.
