What are cognitive distortions?
maladaptive or distorted thoughts that contribute to psychological problems - mind reading, catastrophizing
What is Cognitive restructuring?
a core component of CBT; identifying and changing maladaptive patterns of thinking
What are exposure based techniques?
multiple disorders are characterized by anxiety or fear plus avoidance - multiple treatment involve exposure to a feared situation, stimulus, or sensation
What is Prolonged exposure for PTSD
helping client reprocess the traumatic event, reducing avoidance - reminders of the event
What is EMDR?
Recalling event while following therapist finger or lights - to help process event more quickly
What is systematic desensization?
helpful for phobias - gradually work through a hierarchy of feared situations
What is Exposure and response or ritual prevention (ERP)?
very effective for OCD, exposure a client to the feared stimulus and prevent them from engaging in the ritual or unhelpful coping response
How can you treat a panic disorder?
CBT with exposure: cognitive restructuring of fears around panic attacks - exposure to situations they are avoiding, bodily sensations associated with their panic attacks
