Types of behaviors that put one at risk for HIV are; sharing needles, unprotected intercourse, tattoos & piercings, and transfusions (NOT urine, saliva, toilet seats or hugs). The riskiest sexual behavior associated with the transmission on HIV is unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse.
Be able to categorize which STD’s are viral, bacterial, and parasitic.
- Viral: HIV, Hepatitis A, B, and C, Herpes Simplex Virus 1 & 2, and Warts
- Bacterial: Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Syphilis, Candidiasis, and Nongonococcal Urethritis
- Parasitic: Scabies, Trichomoniasis, and Pubic lice
What are the potential risks if Chlamydia is left untreated in both men and women?
Potential risks if Chlamydia is left untreated in both men and women is it can lead to infertility, causes pink eye, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease in women and Epididymitis (enlarged teste) in men.
How does syphilis progress? What are the stages and the symptoms associated with each?
- Primary Syphilis: exposure to spirochete (bacteria), sore
- Secondary Syphilis: rash, non-painful/itchy
- Latent Syphilis: 10-30 years long, no symptoms
- Tertiary Syphilis: results in death
When is a person who has contracted HSV (herpes) the most and least contagious?
A person who has contracted HSV (herpes) is the most contagious when the herpes sores are present they are least contagious when there is constant and consistent use of condoms.
Which sex is more at risk for HIV infection?
The sex more at risk for HIV infection is males.
What are the most common STD’s in the United States?
Most common STI’s in the United States are Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, Herpes, HPV – warts, Hepatitis B, and HIV.
What age group is most likely to contract STD’s?
The age group that is most likely to contract STI’s is college age students.
Define HIV and AIDS. When is someone diagnosed as having AIDS?
HIV is Human Immunodeficiency Virus and AIDS is Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Someone is diagnosed as having AIDS when they have a T-cell count less than 200 and/or acquiring an opportunistic infection.
How is HSV-1 and HSV-2 transmitted?
HSV-1 is transmitted orally (oral herpes) and HSV-2 (genital herpes) is transmitted through the genitals
How are pubic lice and scabies transmitted? Always sexually?
Pubic lice are spread through body contact or through shared clothing or bedding. Scabies can be passed by close physical contact (sexual and nonsexual).
Genital warts (HPV) are linked to an increased risk for what?
Genital warts (HPV) are linked to an increased risk for HPV infection and cancers of the cervix (cervical cancer), vagina, vulva, urethra, penis and anus.
For which STD’s due we have vaccines?
There are now vaccines to prevent Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and HPV/genital warts.
What are some explanations for why STD’s are being spread in such large numbers?
Lack of testing, lack of education, increase in prevalence of STDs (and if you have one you are more likely to get a second), increase in use of hormonal methods, multiple partners, lack of symptoms, lack of getting tested, etc.
What fluids transmit HIV? What fluids contain the virus?
Fluids that transmit HIV are blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk.
