Phenomenology
The study of individual consciousness
Consciousness
A person’s awareness of their environment
Full Consciousness
a state of consciousness in which a person is aware of his or her own environment
Minimal Consciousness
a relatively fragmented connection between self and environment in which a person might respond to stimulus without being aware of it at a more thoughtful level
Nonconscious activity
a process that occurs in the body that people do not have to monitor or regulate (ex: heart pumping, breathing manually, blood flow, etc)
Preconscious
usually outside a person’s awareness, but is able to be brought into consciousness on demand
Self- Conscious
the most self-aware state of consciousness; it allows a person to focus on his or her individual self
Unconscious
consists of experiences, ideas, and motives that are so threatening or unacceptable that a person has permanently removed them from his or her consciousness
Altered State of Consciousness
a state characterized by bizarre, disorganized, or dreamlike patterns
Sleep
a period of partial or total loss of consciousness that is important for physical and mental health
Circadian Rhythm
a series of biological processes that occur over a 24-hour cycle
