Chapter 15 Flashcards
What is mass wasting?
refers to the downslope movement of rock, regolith, and soil under the direct influence of gravity
What are factors that affect mass wasting?
Gravity, Water, Oversteepened Slope, Removal of Vegetation, Earthquake
What is a landslide?
A sudden event where large quantities of rock move downhill
What are oversteepened slopes?
unstable slopes and can trigger mass movements in cohesive soils, regolith, and bedrock
What does oversteepened slopes affect?
Natural processes such as stream cuts, oversteepen a slope
What is the fastest form of mass wasting?
Rock Avalanche
What is the slowest form of mass wasting?
Creep
Which types of mass has big particle size?
Debris flow
Flow
occurs when material moves downslope as viscous fluid
Slide
occurs when there is a distinct zone of weakness separating the slide material from the underlying material
Rotational slide
surface of rupture is concave up
Transitional slide
material moves along a flat surface
Falls
the freefall of detached individual pieces of any size; steep that loose material cannot remain on surface
Slump
the movement of a mass rock or unconsolidated material as a unit along a curved surface
Rockslide
occurs when blocks of bedrock slide down a slope
