Physical Addiction
o A physical addiction to a drug results because the body builds up a physical need for the drug, so that its sudden denial results in withdrawal symptoms
Psychological dependency:
Experimental
o Psychological dependency is the development of a persistent, sometimes overpowering psychological need for a drug, resulting in a compulsion to take it.
Experimental- short term, see how it makes them feel (curious)
Psychological dependency:
Social/Recreational

Social/Recreational- with friends, shared experiences

Circumstantial

Circumstantial-situational- depends on how they feel

o Hallucinogens- act on CNS to alter perception and one’s state of consciousness (marijuana and LSD which causes flashbacks)

o Depressants—inhalants (slow functioning on CNS) Sprays etc

Smoking
o Smoking- adolescent use is decreasing due to the cost increase will prevent them from becoming addictive. Also considered a gateway drug
Physical effects of drinking
o Physical effects Liver damage Brain cell loss Breast cancer High blood pressure and stroke Hippocampus fails to grow as large Frontal lobe/cerebellum damage
What is binge drinking?
o Binge drinking
5+ drinks in a sitting for males
4+ drinks in a sitting for females
Difference in drink count due to metabolic processes
Reasons people try drugs?
- The majority try drugs out of curiosity.
- Other adolescents begin using drugs as a means of rebellion, protest, and expression of dissatisfaction with traditional norms and values.
- Another reason for trying drugs is for fun or sensual pleasure.
- Another strong motive for trying drugs is a social pressure to be like friends or to be part of a social group.
a. Research indicates that youths who use specific drugs almost invariably have friends who also use the same drugs. - Drugs become a means of feeling more comfortable in social situations.
- There are those users whose primary motive for trying a drug is to gain self-awareness, increased awareness of others, more religious insight, or to become more creative.
- There are some youths who begin selling drugs at an early age, prior to taking drugs.
