Turnover
The termination of an individuals employment with an organization
Voluntary Turnover
Employee initiated termination of employment, such as quits, retirement or resignation
Involuntary Turnover
Employer-initiated termination of employment, such as dismissal or layoff
What are the four main components associated with the cost of turnover?
- Seperation costs

Retirees on call
A program where retirees can continue to work part time or as needed basis post-retierment
Phased Retirement
Potential Retirees gradually reduce the number of hours worked per week over time
Pre-Retirement Counselling
Counselling provided to employees some months (or even years) before retirement, which covers such matters as benefits advice, second careers, and so on
Dismissal
Involuntary termination of an employee’s employment
Dismissal for just cause
An employer - initiated termination based on an employee’s poor behaviours, in these situations, no severance, resonable notice periods or additional payments beyond what they employee has already earned
Insubordination
Wilful disregard or disobedience of the boss’ authority or legitmate orders; criticizing the boss in public

Constructive Dismissal
When the employer makes unilateral changes in the employment contract that are unacceptable to the employee, even though the employee has not been formally terminated
- ILLEGAL
What are the 7 steps to avoid wrongful dismissal suits?
- Use employee contracts with a terminiation clause and with wording clearly permited to terminate without cause during prohibition period
- Document all disciplinary action
- Do not allege just cause for dismissal unless it can be proven
- Time the termination so that it does not conflic with special occasions such as birthday’s or holiday’s
- Use termination letters in all cases - stating settlement offers
- Schedule the termination interview in a private location and at the right time of day
- Include two member of management in termination meeting
