Indian Ocean Commercial Network
The trading network that connected many cities and ports around Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. However, the Portuguese wrecked havoc on it.
Trading-Post Empire
Empires completely based on trade and the control over it rather than the actual people.
Philippines (Spanish)
The islands that were colonized by Spain and named after King Philip. It became a huge place for Christianity in Asia.
British/Dutch East India Companies
Private trading companies supported by the British and Netherlands’ government. They took control of most of the Indian Ocean Trade Network and made war with the people.
Tokugawa Shogunate
People who ruled & unified Japan through military power and rule/ They established a closed door policy against all Europeans except the Dutch.
“Silver Drain”
All of the money in Europe was invested into the luxuries of Asia and other places, leading to an abundance of silver in Asia.
Potosi
A city in the Andes mountain that had the largest silver mine in the world. many moved there & it became the most populated city in all of the Americas.
“Soft Gold”
This refers to the use of animal fur which was highly prized in places like Russia for its warmth, resulting in its trade & allowing people to grow wealthy.
African Diaspora
The spread of African people that were used as slaves due to the trans-Atlantic slave trade. When the African population went to Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas where they were sold and used for labor.
Benin/Dahomey
They were strong African kingdoms. Benin limited slave trade & tried to stop it while Dahomey took advantage of it.
