What is a process theory?
Asks how can people be motivated
What is expectancy theory?
strengths of an individual motivation to do something will depend on the extent to which he expects the results of his efforts to contribute to personal needs and goals F=V*E
What is Herzbergs 2 factor theory?
Identifies needs to avoid unpleasantness and need for personal growth - suggested hygiene (need to avoid unpleasantness) and motivator (personal growth) factors.
What are hygiene factors?
Salary, quality of supervision, interpersonal relations, working conditions, job security, policy and admin
What are motivator factors?
Status, Advancement, Responsibility, Recognition by colleagues, Challenging Work, Growth in job and sense of achievement
What is theory X?
suggests people dislike work and responsibility and will avoid both if possible. Therefore people must be coerced, controlled etc to make an effort
What is theory Y?
suggests that a physical and mental effort at work is as natural as play or rest. People dont dislike work according to work conditions may satisy or dissatisfy
What are intrinsic and extrinsic rewards?
Extrinsic are external to job e.g. pay, benefits etc Intrinsic are internal eg satisfaction and status
