Chapter 14 Thermal Physics Flashcards
What is the internal energy of a gas?
The sum of the random kinetic and potential energies of molecules/atoms
What’s important when talking about energy being lost?
Be specific where the energy is being lost to
Define Boyles law
Boyles law states that when the temperature of a given mass of confined gas is constant, the product of its pressure and volume is also constant.
So P₁V₁=P₂V₂
What is heat?
Heat is a form of energy which flows as a result of a temperature difference, it is determined by total internal kinetic energy of particles in an object.
What is temperature?
Temperature is the property of a body which determines the direction of heat transfer. It is the measure of the average kinetic energy of particles in an object.
What is triple point and when does it exist?
Triple point of a substance exists at a specific temperature and pressure at which the substance is in all three phase states.
What is Thermal equilibrium?
Two objects are in thermal equilibrium when they are in contact and there is no net transfer of heat.
What is internal energy?
The sum of the randomly distributed kinetic and potential energies of the atoms/molecules in the substance.
What is the specific heat capacity?
The amount of energy required to raise a unit mass of a substance by a unit temperature.
What is the specific latent heat of vaporisation?
The energy required to change the phase of a unit mass of a substance from a liquid to a gas at constant temperature.
What is the specific latent heat of fusion?
The energy required to change the phase of a unit mass of a substance from a solid to a liquid at constant temperature.
What is the unit for specific latent heat?
Jkg-1
