What is health psychology?
How psychosocial factors relate to the promotion and maintenance of health
What is the biopsychosocial model?
Physical illness is caused by a complex interaction of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors
What is a primary appraisal?
An initial evaluation of whether an event is irrelevant to you, relevant but not threatening, or stressful
What is a secondary appraisal?
An evaluation of your coping resources and options for dealing with the stress
What is the difference between acute stressors and chronic stressors?
Acute stressors - Threatening events that has a relatively short duration and a clear endpoint
Chronic Stressors - Threatening events that have a long duration and no readily apparent end point
What is frustration?
When the pursuit of a goal is thwarted
What is conflict?
When two or more incompatible motivations compete for expression
Explain the 3 types of conflicts
Approach - approach conflict: A choice between two attractive goals
Avoidance - avoidance conflict: A choice between two unattractive goals
Approach - avoidance conflict: A goal with both attractive and unattractive features
What is pressure?
Expectations or demands that one behave in a certain way
What is the flight or flight response?
A physiological reaction to a threat in which the autonomic nerve system mobilizes the organism for attacking or fleeing an enemy
What are the three stages of general adaptation syndrome?
Alarm
Resistance
Exhaustion
What is neurogenesis?
The formation of new neurons
What is coping?
Active effort to master, reduce or tolerate the demands created by stress
What is learned helplessness?
Passive behaviour produced by exposure to unavoidable aversive events (events are beyond your control)
What is constructive coping?
Healthful efforts that people make to deal with stressful events
