Impeachment
A constitutional procedure by which federal judges and civil officers can be removed from office before their term expires
Executive Privilege
The presidential assertion off the right to withhold certain information from Congress
Legislative Veto
The rejection of a presidential or administrative action by a vote of one or both houses of Congress without the consent of the president
Executive Order
A rule or regulation issued by the president that has the effect of law. Executive orders can implement and give administrative effect to provisions in the Constitution, to treaties, and to statutes
Credit-Mobilier Scandal
Involved the illegal manipulation of contracts by the Union Pacific Railroad and the Credit Mobilier construction company. House of Representatives was the one to investigate it.
Iran Contra Affair
Secret arrangement in the 1980s to provide funds to the Nicaraguan contra rebels from profits gained by selling arms to Iran. The Iran-contra affair was the product of two separate initiatives during the administration of President Ronald Reagan.
Teapot Dome Scandal
Scandal of the early 1920s surrounding the secret leasing of federal oil reserves by the secretary of the interior, Albert Bacon Fall. After Pres. Warren G. Harding transferred supervision of the naval oil-reserve lands from the navy to the Department of the Interior in 1921, Fall secretly granted to Harry F. Sinclair of the Mammoth Oil Company exclusive rights to the Teapot Dome reserves .
Watergate Scandal
Some men hired by the Nixon re-election team broke into the Democratic headquarters at the Watergate building to get info they could use in the election. When discovered, Nixon covered it up, resulting in the scandal and Nixon’s refusal to give up the unedited versions of the tapes.
War Powers Act
Requires the following: the President, upon sending troops into military action, must notify Congress within 48 hours that he has done so. The Resolution also forbids military personnel from remaining in a state of conflict for more than 60 days (including an additional 30 days for withdrawal). After that, the President must seek an additional authorization from Congress or a formal declaration of war.
Pardons
An executive grant providing restoration of all rights and privileges of citizenship to a specific individual charged or convicted of a crime.
22nd Amendment
Prohibits any U.S. president from being elected to more than two terms and prohibits any vice president who rises to the office of president and holds the office for more than two years from being elected to more than one full term.
25th Amendment
A 1967 amendment to the Constitution that establishes procedures for filling presidential and vice presidential vacancies and makes provisions for presidential disability
