Psychological or mental disorder
Patter of behavioral or psychological symptoms that causes significant personal distress, impairs the ability to function in one or more important areas of life or both
DSM-5
Stands for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition . A book that describes more than 260 specific psychological disorders. Provides codes for each disorder & includes the symptoms
Anxiety
Feeling of tension, apprehension, and worry that often hits during personal crises & everyday conflicts
Anxiety disorders
Anxiety is maladaptive , disrupting everyday activities,moods,and thought processes.
Panic attack
Sudden episode of extreme anxiety that rapidly escalates in intensity
Panic disorder
When panic attacks occur frequently and unexpectedly
Agoraphobia
Involves fear of suffering a panic attack or other embarrassing or incapacitating symptoms in a place from which escape would be difficult or impossible
Post Traumatic stress disorder
Long lasting disorder that develops in response to an extreme physical or psychological trauma
4 symptoms of PTSD
- Frequently recalls the event
- avoids stimuli or situations that tend to trigger memories of the experience
- may experience negative alterations in thinking, moods, & emotions
- experiences increased physical arousal; easily startled & prone to angry outburst
Symptoms of major depressive disorder
Emotional: feeling of sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, guilt, emptiness. Feeling emotionally disconnected
Behavioral: dejected facial expression, makes less eye contact, smiles less often
Cognitive: difficulty thinking, concentrating, & remembering , suicidal thoughts
Physical: changes in appetite resulting in significant, weight loss or gain, diminished sexual interest
Bipolar Disorder
Used to be called manic depression. Mood disorder involving periods of incapacitating depression with depression alternating with periods of extreme euphoria & excitement; formerly called manic depression
Cyclothymic Disorder
People experience moderate but frequent mood swings for two years or longer
Schizophrenia
Is a psychological disorder that involves severely distorted beliefs, perception and thoughts processes
Positive & negative symptoms
Positive: reflect an excess or distortion of normal functioning
Negative: reflect an absence or reduction of normal functions, such as greatly reduced motivation, emotional expressiveness, or speech
