chapter 14 (partial correlation & multiple regression) Flashcards
partial correlation
a multivariate technique for examining bivariate relationship while controlling for other variables.
control variables
a “third variable” (Z) that might affect a bivariate relationship.
direct relationship
a multivariate relationship in which the control variable has no effect on the bivariate relationship.
spurious relationship
multivariate relationship in which the bivariate relationship becomes substantially weaker after controlling for a third variable. the independent (X) and dependent (Y) variables are not causally linked. rather, both variables are caused by the control variable (Z).
intervening relationship
a multivariate relationship in which the bivariate relationship becomes substantially weaker after controlling for a third variable. the independent (X) and dependent (Y) variables are linked primarily through the control variable (Z).
zero-order correlations
correlation coefficients for bivariate relationships.
partial correlation coefficients
statistic that shows the relationship between two variables while controlling for other variables.
