Chapter 14 - Musculoskeletal System (General) Flashcards
What does the MS system consist of?
Muscle, bones, bone marrow, joints, cartilage, and bursae
How many vertebrae are in each section of spinal column?
Cervical - 7, Thoracic - 12, and Lumbar - 5
How many bones are in the body?
206
What is another term for joints?
Articulations
Differentiate between a tendon and a ligament
Ligament connects bone to join. Tendon connects bone to bone.
Characteristics of smooth muscle
Located in internal organs. They respond to impulses from the autonomic nerves and are not controlled voluntarily.
Characteristics of skeletal muscle
Attached to bones by tendons and makes body movement possible. We have control over these muscles.
Characteristics of cardiac muscle
Forms most of the wall of the heart. Involuntary contraction products the heartbeat.
Abduction (movement)
Moving away the midline
Inversion (movement)
Turning inward
Eversion (movement)
Turning outward
Extension (movement)
Move limb into straight position
Flexion (movement)
Move limb in bent position
Pronation (movement)
Movement that turns palms down
Rotation (movement)
Turning around it’s own axis
Supination (movement)
Movement that turns palm up
Arthroscopy
Visual exam of joint
ankylosing spondylitis
Arthritis affects spine, forward bend of spine
Bunion
Abnormal prominence of joint, base of great toe
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Nerve entrapment at wrist, compression of median nerve
Colles fracture
Wrist fracture, distal radius
Exostosis
Abnormal benign growth on bone surface (spur)
Gout
Disease with excessive uric acid in blood, sodium urate crystals deposited in joints
Herniated disk
Rupture of IVD cartilage
Lyme disease
Infection of bacteria, various symptoms including joint pain
Muscular dystrophy
Group of hereditary diseases, muscle weakness and degeneration
Myasthenia gravis
Chronic disease characterized by muscle weakness, defect in nerve impulse transmission
Osteoporosis
Abnormal loss of bone density, prone to fractures
Plantar fasciitis
Infection of plantar fascia, due to repetitive injury; heel pain
Rheumatoid arthritis
Autoimmune disease, inflammatory changes in CT
Spinal stenosis
Narrowing of spinal canal with nerve compression; congenitalo or degeneration
Adduction (movement)
Moving towards the midline
