Chapter 14 (experimental chemistry) Flashcards
How is the periodic table arranged?
The periodic table is arranged by elements in increasing proton number
What does the group number represent?
It represents the number of outer shell / valence shell electrons there are
What does the period number represent?
The period number represents the number of electron shells an element has
What is the characteristic of metallic properties in an element across a period
There is a decrease in metallic properties and an increase in non-metallic properties across a period
What is the characteristic of metallic properties of elements down a group
There is an increase in metallic properties and a decrease in non-metallic properties going down a group
What are the group 1 elements called
alkali metals
What are the properties of alkali metals
-are soft and can be cut easily
-low melting and boiling points
-have low densities
What is the relationship between alkali metals and reactivity
The lower down in the group, the more reactive the alkali metals are
What are the elements in group 17 called
Halogens
What are the properties of halogens
-low melting and boiling points
-are coloured
What is the name of halogens that react with metals
halides
What is the relationship of reactivity of halogens
The further down in the group, the less reactive the halogens are
What are group 18 elements called
noble gases
What are the properties of noble gases
-monoatomic non-metals
-colourless gases at room temperature
-low melting and boiling points
-insoluble in water
-unreactive
Why are noble gases unreactive
They have fully filled valence shells and thus do not lose, gain or share electrons
