Chapter 12 (Oxidation and reduction) Flashcards
What is oxidation
-gain oxygen
-loss of hydrogen
-loss of electrons
-oxidation state increases
What is reduction
-loss oxygen
-gain hydrogen
-gain electrons
-oxidation state decreases
What reactions and redox reactions?
respiration, photosynthesis and the haver process
What reactions are non-redox reactions
Acid-base reactions and precipitation of salts
What do oxidising agents do
-oxidise another substance
-increase the oxidation state of an element in another substance
-gain electrons from the other substance
What are examples of oxidising agents
oxygen, chlorine, potassium manganate (VII)
What do reducing agents do
-reduce another substance
-decrease the oxidation state of an element in another substance
-lose electrons to the other substance
What are examples of reducing agents
hydrogen, reactive metals, carbon and potassium iodide
