Chapter 14 - Chemistry Flashcards
What do we rely on to make new products and provide us with energy?
Earth’s natural resources
How is water made fit to drink?
By passing through filter beds to remove solids and adding chlorine.
What can water be purified by?
Distillation, but this requires large amounts of energy which makes it expensive.
What does reverse osmosis use to separate dissolved salts for salty water?
Membranes, but this method uses desalination uses energy to make the high pressures needed.
What does waste water require before being released into the environment?
It requires treatment at a sewage works.
What does sewage treatment involve?
It involves the treatment of organic matter and harmful microorganisms and chemicals
What are Life Cycle assessments carried out to assess?
The environmental impact of products, processes or services.
What is data available for?
The use of energy, water, resources, and production of some wastes.
What can recycling metals save?
It saves energy and our limited, finite metal ores (and fossil fuels).
