What is Kush?
The first major kingdom of sub-Saharan Africa. In550 bc Meroe became Kush’s capital.
Africa’s 5 regions
- The northern and southern coasts
- The deserts

What is Axum?
A Christian kingdom in 324. They built underground churches.
What is Swahili?
A blended language and culture of the Bantu and Arab Muslims.
How was African trade?
The savanna’s empires wealth was based on the gold and salt trade. 2/3 of gold came from west Africa.
What is Timbuktu?
A main trade city in Africa.
What does Mali stand for?
“Where the king lives”
Who was Mansa Musa?
A great king of Mali. He made a pilgrimage to Mecca and gave away a lot of gold.
What crops were grown in the Americas?
Corn, potatoes, squash, avocados, pumpkins, tomatoes, peanuts, and a variety of beans
Describe the Olmec civilization?
Lived in Mexico in 1200 bc
Built cities and large stone heads
Describe the Mayans.
Built 80 cities between 300 and 900.
Mayan calendars were based on astronomy and were extremely accurate.
Pyramid of the Sun-stood 20 stories tall
Describe the Incas.
Pachacuti became leader in 1438.
10,000 miles of stone highways in the Andes mountains
Built city of Machu Picchu
Describe the Aztecs.
Lived in southern Mexico.
City- Tenochtitlan “ city in a place where an eagle is perched don a cactus with a snake in its mouth”
Conquered other kingdoms
Describe Easter island.
Island with large numbers of statues. No one knows what ancient culture built these statues.
