A

They were disappointed that it was not included in the Great Reform Act and Parliament was flooded with petitions against the continuance of slavery in the British empire, led by humanitarian and evangelical groups.

How had the attitude to the concept of slavery changed years earlier?

A

To a literate, nonconfirmist, more democratically-minded urban society, the notion of slavery had become abhorrent. But, the plantation owners in British Colonies were dependent on slave labour and so were reluctant to accept this.

A

Slave revolts were not unusual, but the level of violence caused shock and fear amongst plantation owners who feared for their lives.

When was the Abolition of Slavery Act Passed?

A

After a Parliamentary enquiry, the act was passed 1833. Officially to end August 1834. But in practiice they were reclassified as apprentices with planned release dates as far ahead as 1840. Peaceful protests brought this to 1838.

What was done to satisfy plantation owners?

A

Compensation was paid to all owners of slaves (£20,000,000) which reflected the belief that slavery was no longer morally acceptable, whilst catering to the interest of families among the political classes. A system of indentured labours was introduced, bringing workers from India.

What was the system of indentured labours?

A

Workers were brought over from India, and although regulations were put in place to safeguard immigrant workers, it could be classed as a form of forced labour and there were many abuses of the system. It was a legal contrast between 2 parties, Indian labourers agreed to work for a specific period, usually 5 years, in British colonies for agreed wages and specified conditions.

A

The Anti-Slavery Society 1839, objective of getting rid of slavery worldwide which still operates today.
