Chapter 14 Flashcards
What is power? And what are its units
The rate of which work is done, work divided by time. Joules per second and watts per horsepower
1 hp equals how many watts
746 W
What does the mechanical advantage or MA tell us?
How much the machine makes the force easier
How do machines make work easier
By making the distance greater and force less
Define effort and resistance force:
Effort force is the input force on the machine. Resistance force is the output force done by a machine
What is efficiency, how do we decrease it
Output work divided by input work, decreased the friction
What would be true about work input and output if there wasn’t any friction
They would be the same
How do inclined planes make work easier?
They increase the distance
What is a wedge
To inclined planes back to back
How can we increase the MA have a wedge?
Make it less steep and longer
Define a screw
Inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder
How does a screw multiply it’s effort?
By spreading out The force
What is a fulcrum
The pivot point on a lever
Give two examples of each class of a lever
First class, seesaw and scissors
Second class, wheelbarrow and door
Third class, broom and bat
What is work? What are its units?
The movement of the force applied to an object, Force multiplied by distance. Joules and Newton meters
