Chapter 14 Flashcards
Magnetic Pole
A point or region on a magnet where the magnetic field lines converge or diverge
Magnetic Dipole
A system where two opposite magnetic poles of equal strength are separated by a distance
Magnetic Monopole
A hypothetical particle or object that possesses only one magnetic pole, either a north pole (N) or a south pole (S), without an accompanying opposite pole
Magnetic Force
The force exerted between magnetic objects or between a magnetic object and a moving charged particle
k’ in Ampère’s law
1 x 10^-7 N/A^2
Magnetic Field
The region of space around a magnet or a current-carrying conductor where magnetic forces are exerted on magnetic materials or moving charged particles
Electromagnet
A type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by the flow of electric current
Magnetic Flux
A measure of the quantity of magnetic field passing through a surface
Faraday’s Law
The relationship between a changing magnetic field and the induction of an electromotive force (EMF) or voltage in a conductor
Electromagnetic Induction
The process by which a changing magnetic field induces an electromotive force (EMF) or voltage in a conductor
Lenz’s Law
Describes the direction of the induced electromotive force (EMF) or voltage in a conductor due to electromagnetic induction
Generator
A device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy
Transformer
An electrical device that is used to transfer electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction
