What is the medical model? How is it used to understand abnormal behavior?
Medical model: Proposed that it is useful to think of abnormal behavior as a disease.
Without the medical model, people thought of abnormal behavior as being possessed by demons, to be witches in league with the devil, or victims of God’s punishment
What do diagnosis, etiology, and prognosis mean?
Diagnosis: Distinguishing one illness from another
Etiology: The apparent causation and developmental history of an illness
Prognosis: A forecast about the probable course of an illness
How do we know if a person has a disorder? In other words, what guidelines do psychologists use to determine abnormality? (Hint: there are three determinants of abnormality.)
Deviance, Maladaptive behavior, and personal distress
