What are the separate bodies of the UN?
General Assembly - parliament and voting body
Secretariat - staff members, day to day work
International Court of Justice - judicial body, settles legal disputes
Security Council - maintaining international peace/justice
Economic and Social Council - responsible for economic, social and environmental issues
Trusteeship Council - prepares trust territories for self-government and independence.
What is the UN Charter and what does it cover?
Outlines rights and obligations of members of UN
States purpose of the UN.
Sets out principles for UN to act by
- sovereign equality of members
- peaceful settlement of international disputes
- refraining from threat or use of force against any nation
- non-intervention in matters within domestic jurisdiction of any nation.
What are two key Non-Government Organisations (NGOs)
UNICEF - United Nations Child Emergency Fund (provides children around the world with emergency food, shelter and health care with donated money
Amnesty International - Focuses on protection of human dignity, ending torture, abolition of death penalty, rights of refugees, rights of prisoners of conscience, women’s children’s minorities and Indigenous rights.
What is the role of the UN high commissioner for human rights?
coordinates activities and supervises human rights council in Switzerland. Protects and promotes human rights (recognised and not recognised by international law)
What is the role of the UN high commissioner for refugees?
head of agency tasked with coordinating international efforts to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Works to ensure everyone can have access to right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another state.
