An event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe
e.g

strides
Walk with long, decisive steps in a specified direction.
e.g
Your planet is so small that three strides will take you all the way around it.
scorn
A feeling and expression of contempt or disdain for someone or something.
e.g
That man would be scorned by all the others
