Impeachment
The process of removing not a discredited president
Watergate Scandal
The events and scandal surrounding a break in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972 and the subsequent coverup of White House involvement, leading to the eventual resignation of President Nixon under threat of impeachment
Twenty-Fifth Amendment
The Vice President becomes acting president of the the president is determined to be disabled by the Vice and the cabinet. Passed in 1951
Cabinet
The group of presidential advisors not mentioned in the Constitution regardless of the fact that every president has had one
National Security Council
The committee that links the presidents key foreign and military political advisors
Council of Economic Advisors
A three member body appointed by the president to advise them on economic policy
Office of Management and Budget
A handful of political appointees and skilled professionals who perform managerial and budgetary functions
Veto
The constitutional power of the president to send a bill back into Congress for reconsideration (2/3 both Houses must approve it)
Pocket Veto
A veto taking place within 10 days of Congress adjourning where the president ignores the bill and it dies
Presidential Coattails
When voters cast ballots for congressional candidates of the president’s party because they support the president
Twenty-Second Amendment
Limits the presidency to two terms (passed in 1951)
War Powers Resolution
A law passed in 1973 in reaction to American participation in the Vietnam War requiring presidents to consult with Congress whenever possible prior to use of military force
Legislative veto
The ability of Congress to override a presidential decision (potentially in violation of separation of powers)
Crisis
A sudden, unpredictable, and potentially dangerous event requiring presidential management
