As sports grow in popularity government involvement usually increases. Sports facilities may be so expensive that regional and national governments are the only entities with the power and resources to build and maintain them
Government involvement also occurs when there is a need for a third-party to regulate and control sports and sports organizations in ways that promote the overall good of people and a community or society

Refers to an ability to influence people and achieve goals even in the face of opposition from others
Authority
A form of power that comes with a recognized and legitimate status of office and a government an organization or an established set of relationships
When the population of a nation is very diverse a government is likely to use sports to promote national unity and identity

If people and traditional cultures want to preserve their native games they must resist a dependency status but this is difficult and international sports when the rules and other structural characteristics of the sports reflect and privilege the ideologies of powerful nations
