Chapter 1.3 Separating Mixtures Flashcards
What is the definition of a mixture?
A mixture is made up of two or more substances (elements or compounds) that are not chemically combined together.
Name four techniques of separation methods.
Filtration, Crystallisation, Distillation and Chromatography.
Give one difference between mixtures and compounds.
Compounds- There are chemical bonds between atoms of the different elements in the compound.
Mixture- There are no chemical bonds between atoms of the different substances in a mixture.
What is the definition of distillation?
Distillation is the technique of heating a liquid to create vapour which is collected when cooled separate from the original liquid.
What is the definition of filtration?
Physical or biological operations that separate solids from fluids (liquids or gases) by adding a medium through which only the fluid can pass.
What is the definition of crystallisation?
Crystallisation is used to produce solid crystals from a solution.
What is the definition of chromatography?
Chromatography separates mixtures of substances dissolved in a solvent as they move up a piece of chromatography paper.
