Chapter 1.1 Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is the definition of an element?
When a substance contains only one type of an atom.
What is the definition of an atom?
An atom is the smallest constituent unit of ordinary matter. Every solid, liquid, gas, and plasma is composed of neutral or ionized atoms.
What is the periodic table?
It is where all the elements are written down in the order of atomic number.
What is the difference between atomic mass and number ?
Atomic mass is also known as atomic weight. Atomic mass is the weighted average mass of an atom of an element based on the relative natural abundance of that element’s isotopes. The mass number is a count of the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom’s nucleus.
Which group are the alkali metals? and what are the first three in terms of atomic number?
Group 1, Lithium, sodium and potassium.
Which group are the alkaline earth metals? and what are the first three?
Group 2, Beryllium, Magnesium and calcium.
Which group are the halogens? What are the first three?
Group 7, Fluorine, chlorine and Bromine.
Which group are the noble gases? What are the first three?
Group 0, Helium, Neon and Argon.
What is a compound?
Two or more atoms bonded together to form a substance.
What are the components of a nucleus? What charges do they have?
Protons have a positive charge and neutrons have a neutral charge.
How can you differentiate whether something is a non-metal or metal on the periodic table?
The staircase going from Boron to astatine, to the left of the line there would metals and to the right of the line there would be non-metals.
