What is leading?
The process of arousing enthusiasm and directing efforts towards organisational goals.
What is vision, and what is visionary leadership?
Vision is a term used to describe a clear sense of the future.
Visionary leadership brings to the situation this vision and an understanding of how to get there.
What is power? What are the two sets of power sources?
Power is the ability to get someone else to do something you want done or to make things happen the way you want.
Two sets of power sources are position power and personal power.
What is position power and what are types of this power source?
Position power is based on the position you hold within an organisation’s hierarchy
- Reward power is the ability to influence through rewards.
Coercive power is the ability to influence through punishments.
Legitimate power is the ability to influence through authority.
What is personal power and what are types of this power source?
Personal power is based on the personal qualities that one brings to a leadership position
Expert power is the ability to influence through special expertise - the ability to influence because others recognised your knowledge, understanding and skills.
Referent power is the ability to influence through identification - the ability to influence because others admire you or want to identify positively with you.
What is empowerment?
The process through which managers enable others to gain power and achieve influence within the organisation.
What traits are common amongst successful leaders?
Drive Self confidence Creativity Motivation Flexibility Honesty
What are five different types of leadership style?
Each style is based on concern for people and concern for task.
Impoverished managers focus on minimum effort to get work done - low concern for people and task
Country club managers focus on people’s needs, high concern for people, low concern for task
Authority-obedience managers focus on efficiency of tasks. High concern for task, low concern for people
Team managers focus on building commitment for shared purposes, high concern for people and task.
Middle of the road managers focus on being balanced, middle concern for each
What is a contingency theory of leadership?
Theories that have been developed contending that there is not one best way to lead an organisation and that some styles may be effective in some situations whilst others may not be.
In the Hersey-Blanchard situational leadership model, how do leaders adjust their leadership style?
Based on the maturity of followers of which is indicated by their readiness to perform in a given situation. Readiness is based on how willing or confident followers are to perform a task.
What the possible combinations of leadership styles that result in this model?
Delegating - allowing the group to make and take responsibility for decisions. Works best in high-readiness situations of able and willing or confident followers.
Telling - Giving specific task directions and closely supervising work, Works best in low readiness situations where followers are unable and unwilling or insecure.
Selling - Explaining task directions in a supportive and persuasive way. Works best in moderate to high readiness - followers unable but willing or confident.
Participation - emphasising shared ideas and participatory decisions. Works best in low to moderate readiness situations - followers able but not willing or secure.
