Chapter 13: Heart and Vessels Flashcards
The heart consist of Four chambers what are they
Two atria
Two ventricles
The heart pumps blood into two circuits
- Pulmonary circuit
- Systemic circuit
These transport blood away from the heart
Arteries
These transport blood toward the heart
Veins
The vessels that interconnect arteries and veins
Capillaries
The base of the heart is called
Superior border
The point inferior part of the heart is called the
Apex
Describe the Atria heart chamber (Receiving chambers)
-Right atrium
- Left atrium
Both atria contain an expandable anterior portion called auricle
The Ventricle heart chamber (discharging chambers)
-Right ventricle
- Left ventricle
The four chambers of the heart can be
identified by sulci (grooves) on the
external surface
- Coronary sulcus
separates the atria and the
ventricles - Anterior interventricular sulcus
separates the left and right
ventricles - Posterior interventricular sulcus
separates the left and right
ventricles - Interatrial groove
separates the left and right atria
Three types of capillaries
- Continuous= lining is complete, most common
- Fenestrated= Lining is not complete, they have pores
- Sinusoids= lining is not complete, have pores and gaps
What are veins
Collect blood from the capillaries
What is the largest/ thickest layer of a vein
Adventitia
Contains elastic fibers
Describe pulmonary circuit
Composed of arteries and veins that transport blood between the heart and the lungs
Travel short distances
Describe Systemic circuit
Composed of arteries and veins that transport oxygenated blood between the heart and the other tissues
Travel long distances
