Chapter 13 - CVD, Hypertension, Stroke, Diabetes Flashcards
What Is similar of all chronic disorders
- Involve circulatory and metabolic systems
- May be co-morbid
- Many have modifiable risk factors
- Non communicable (std’s)
What is the prevalence of Coronary Heart Disease?
Number 2 cause of death
- accounts for one out of 5 deaths
- 20% of men
- 22% of women
What is CHD A DISEASE OF?
Modernization - spoonfed society
What is atherosclerosis?
Narrowing of coronary arteries leading to and from heart
- limits blood flow can increase risk of blood clots
What can happen if blood flow stops?
2 types?
Temporal shortage causes ANGINA PECTORIS (stabbing pain)
Severe deprivation causes MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION (heart attack)
What mediates CHD?
Pro inflammatory cytokines (IL-6)
- stimulates a process to cause atherosclerotic plaques
What is CRP?
We don’t know if it is the cause of plaque or an indicator
- predictor of CHD
- produced in liver and released in bloodstream
What is a systematic disease?
Something that impacts several systems
What are 5 risk factors of CHD?
- High blood pressure
- Obesity
- High serum cholesterol
- Smoking
- Low activity
What is a metabolic syndrome?
Three or more of the following
- Obesity Centeered around the waist
- High blood pressure
- Low levels of HDL
- Difficulty metabolizing blood sugar (pre-diabetes)
- High levels of triglycerides
What is hypertension?
High blood pressure
What are the 4 major chronic disorders?
- Heart disease (cardiovascular disease)
- Stroke (cardiovascular disease)
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
