Chapter 13 Acids and Bases Flashcards
Examples of acids
- Citric Acid
- Carbonic Acid
- Hydrochloric Acid
- Sulfuric Acid
Examples of Bases
- Sodium Carbonate
- Sodium Hydroxide
- Calcium Carbonate
- Limewater
Alkali
A base that is soluble in water.
Concentrated and Dilute
Concentrated solutions contain a large amount of acid or alkali particles.
Dilute solutions contain very few particles of acid or alkali.
pH Scale
Used to record how concentrated an acid or alkaline solution is.
A substance that has a pH of 7 is neutral.
A substance that has a pH below 7 is acidic.
A substance that has a pH above 7 is alkaline.
Indicator
A substance that shows whether the solution being tested is an acid or base.
An acid will turn blue litmus red.
A base will turn red litmus blue.
Neutralisation Reaction
When an acid and a base react to produce salt and water.
Acid + Carbonate =
Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
Titration
A laboratory technique that is used to find the exact volume of acid needed to neutralise a base.
Everyday Neutalisation Reactions (2)
Agriculture: Spreading powdered limestone (calcium carbonate) on acidic soil to raise its pH. Treating Indigestion (too much hydrochloric acid in the stomach): Remedies like Milk of Magnesia contain a base to neutralise the acid.
Acid + Metal =
Salt + Hydrogen Gas
