Trail of Tears
The route along which the United States government forced several tribes of Native Americans, including the Cherokees, Seminoles, Chickasaws, Choctaws, and Creeks, to migrate to reservations west of the Mississippi River in the 1820s, 1830s, and 1840s.
Tariff of Abominations
The “Tariff of 1825” was a protective tariff passed by the Congress of the United States on May 19, 1828, designed to protect industry in the northern United States.
Indian Removal Act
passed by Congress on May 28, 1830, during the presidency of Andrew Jackson. The law authorized the president to negotiate with Indian tribes in the Southern United States for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for their ancestral homelands.
Bank War
refers to the political struggle that developed over the issue of rechartering the Second Bank of the United States (BUS) during the Andrew Jackson administration (1829–1837).
Whig Party
was a political party active in the middle of the 19th century in the United States of America. Four Presidents of the United States were members of the Whig Party.
Two Party System
A system where two major political parties dominate politics within a government. One of the two parties typically holds a majority in the legislature and is usually referred to as the majority party while the other is the minority party.
Spoils System
the practice of a successful political party giving public office to its supporters.
