James-Lange Theory
Physiological activities come before emotional experience. (Our experience of emotions is our awareness of our physiological responses or emotional-arousing stimuli).
Emotions
A response of the whole organisms, involving physiological arousal expressive behavior and conscious experience.
Cannon-Bard Theory
An emotional arousing stimulus simultaneously triggers physiological responses and the subjective experience of emotion.
Schacter-2 Factor Theory
To experience emotion, one must be physically aroused and cognitively label the arousal.
Polygraph
A machine commonly used attempts to detect lies, that measures several of the physiological responses accompanying emotion.
Catharsis
Emotional release. In psychology, the catharsis hypnosis maintains that “releasing” aggressive energy relieves aggressive urges.
Feel-good, Do-good Phenomenon
People’s tendency to be helpful when in a good mood.
Subjective Well-Being
Self-perceived happiness or satisfaction with life.
Adaption-Level Phenomenon
Our tendency to form judgments relative to a natural level defined by our prior experience.
Relative Deprivation
The perception that one is worse odd relative to those with whom one compares oneself.
