Chapter 13 Flashcards
What are meninges?
fingrous membranes that enclode the spinal cord (3)
Dura Mater
-outer most meninge
-forms a loose fitting sleeve called the dural sheath around the spinal cord
Arachnoid Mater
-middle meninge
-5 to 6 layers of squamous to cuboidal cells
Pia Mater
-inner most meninge
-1 to 2 layers of squamous to cuboidal cells
Grey Matter
-little myelin
-contains somas, dnedrites, and proximal parts of of the axons odf neurons
-site of all neural integration in the spinal cord!!!
where is the site of all neural integration in the spinal cord?
the grey matter
White Matter
-abundance of myelin
-bundles of axons (tracts) carry signals from one level of the CNS to another
posterior horns
recieve sensory nerve fibers fromt he spinal nerves
anterior horns
contains the large neurosomas of motor neurons that lead to skeletal muscles
lateral horns
contains neurons of the synaptic nervous system
Ascending tract
carries SENSORY inforamtion UP the spinal cord
Descending tract
carriers MOTOR information DOWN the spinal cord
Spinothalmic Tract Information
pain
temperature
tickle
itch
light/crude touch
Cuneate Fasciculus Information
Touch, pressure, info
about limb/trunk
position and
movement, visceral
pain from T6 up
Graciles fasciculus Tract Information
Touch, pressure, info
about limb/trunk
position and
movement, visceral
pain from T6 down
