Chapter 12 - What Causes Emotional And Motivated Behaviour Flashcards
Orbitofrontal cortex
Prefrontal cortex located behind the eye sockets (or orbits) that receives projections from the dorsomedial nucleus of the thalamus; plays a central role in a variety of emotional and social behaviors as well as in eating.
Emotion
Cognitive interpretation of subjective feelings.
Motivation
Behavior that seems purposeful and goal-directed.
Sensory deprivation
Experimental setup in which a subject is allowed only restricted sensory input; subjects generally have a low tolerance for deprivation and may even display hallucinations.
Drives
Hypothetical state of arousal that motivates an organism to engage in a particular behavior.
Flush model of motivation
Drive theories maintain that reservoirs of action-specific energies, once released, flow out and produce behavior. The greater the behavior’s energy store, the longer it persists. Without an energy store, there is no behavior.
Androgen
Male hormone related to level of sexual interest.
