Chapter 12 Universal Design Flashcards
What is optimal universal design?
Environments that enhance usability for all beyond access for people with disabilities
Principles of universal design
- Equitable use
- Flexibility in use
- Simple and intuitive use
- Perceptible information
- Tolerance for error
- Low physical effort
- Size and space for approach and use
Explain equitable use
Same means of use for all users
Design useful and marketable to diverse abilities
E.g. power sensor doors
Explain flexibility in use
Accommodates a wide range of individual preference and abilities
There is choice in method of use
E.g. right and left handed scissors
Explain simple and intuitive use
Easy to understand
Accommodates a range of literacy
E.g. moving sidewalk
Explain perceptible information
Design communicates necessary information
E.g. tactile, verbal and visual cues
Explain tolerance for error
Minimizes hazards and accidental consequences of misuse
E.g. double cut car keys, undo features
Explain low physical effort
Efficient and comfortable with minimum fatigue
E.g. lowered or loop handles on doors
Explain size and space for approach and use
E.g. wide security gates
Program planning and universal design
Learn minimum requirements
Consult people with disabilities
Analyze all aspects of site and design
Make better decisions above minimum requirements
