Chapter 12 - Test 3 Material (Pop Quiz 1) Flashcards
Cobalt
Function: requires as component of B12
Tissue Distribution: in liver, kidney, bone tissue
Deficiency: loss of appetite, reduced growth, decreases B12 in rumen
Toxicity: not likely because of low absorption rate
Iodine
Function: constituent of thyroxin and other thyroid active compounds
Tissue Distribution: most is in thyroid (70-80% total body I) also in stomach, salivary glands, skin, ovary
Deficiency: reduced growth, dry skin, brittle hair, repo problems
Toxicity: not common but chronic excess will disrupt thyroid
Goiters Syndrome
Zinc
Functions: constituent of numerous enzymes, activates enzymes immune function
Tissue Distribution: in liver, bone, kidney, muscle, pancreas, eye, skin
Deficiency: anorexia, loss of hair, feathers, wool, cracked paws, repro
Toxicity: wide margin of safety, anemia, stiffness, no appetite, hemorrhage
Iron
Functions: carries oxygen to tissue, stores transport electrons
Tissue Distribution: stores in liver, spleen, bone marrow, blood
Deficiency: anemia
- common in newborns
- piglets prone to it
Toxicity: diarrhea, reduce growth, Metabolic acidosis, vascular congestion
Copper
Functions: enzyme activity, collagen and elastin formation, melanin production
Tissue Distribution: live, brain, kidney, heart, hair
Deficiency: anemia, bone abnormalities, alopecia, repro failure
Toxicity: jaundice, tissue necrosis, mild anemia, liver damage
Manganese
Function: normal formations, prevent ataxia, poor equilibrium, CHO and lipid metabolism
Tissue Distribution: in bone, kidney, liver, pancreas, pituitary gland
Deficiency: skeletal abnormality? Delayed estrus, poor conception, decreased litter size, decreased egg production
Toxicity: reduced appetite and growth, interfere with a Ca and P utilization
Selenium
Functions: component of enzymes, integrity of cellular membranes
Tissue Distribution: in all cells of body
Deficiency: muscular dystrophy, liver necrosis, stiff lamb disease, infertility
Toxicity: blind staggers disease, reduced egg production, chick deformities, abnormal embryonic development
Microminerals
Just remember 7 Macrominerals
Functions: activators of enzymes
Components of organic compounds
