Chapter 12: Mischel and Bandura Flashcards
People are very different. Can only predict 10% of variability of behavior.
Personality Coefficient
Traits + Situation = more likely to be able to predict behavior
Consistency paradox
thought factors within a person which influence how an individual adapts to the environment
Cognitive Person Variables
Personal constructs (ideas) people use to describe themselves. Unique to each person
Self-system
a typical example of a category. Can lead to stereotypes
ex. a golden retriever is the most dog-like dog.
Prototype
What a person is able to do
Competencies
subjective beliefs about what will happen in a particular situation
Expectancies
expectation about what will happen if a person behaves a particular way.
ex. If they are nice to me I will be nice to them.
Behavior-outcome expectancy
What events will follow other environmental stimuli
ex. if I miss this bus, the next one will be by in about 10 minutes
stimulus outcome expectancies
subjective beliefs about what a persona will be able to do
ex. can I even make it to the bus stop before it gets there or will I fall on my face trying?
Self-efficacy expectancies
ways a person works on complicated behavior (setting goals, self criticism)
self-regulatory systems and plans
ability to defer present gratification for larger future goals
delay of gratification
The person, environment and behavior all influence one another.
ex. a influences B and B influences A
reciprocal determinism
our way of thinking what’s going on around us. Our thoughts
Self-System
believing that one can organize and execute given courses of action required to deal with prospective situation
ex. Do I believe I can organize and get something done
Self efficacy
noticing the model’s behavior (a prerequisite for learning by modeling). Includes the model and the observer.
Attentional processes
Putting the behavior into memory, how the task was done.
Retention processes
Being able to do it, get up and reproduce model’s behavior
Motor reproduction processes
Decide whether task is worth doing.
motivational processes
learning by observing others without being directly rewarded oneself
ex. watching an older sibling make mistakes and learning from their mistakes
Vicarious Learning
Change of self-system, change to environment
Bandura’s view of successful therapy
groups believe that they, as a group, can do what needs to be done.
Collective efficacy
