Vassals were tenants of the nobles. The dominant social system in medieval Europe in which the nobility held lands from the crown in exchange for military services. The peasants were obliged to live in their land and give them loyalty and labor and a share of the produce for military protection
What what’s the purpose of feudalism
To establish law order and security after Charlemagne’s empire crumbled
Lords
A noble who is a land holder for the crown. In return they provide knights for the king
Knights
A heavily armored warrior/soldier usually with armor and a horse
Vassals
Lower nobles who were permitted to use the lords land in return for certain promised services (providing more knights for the lords)
Chivalry
The code of conduct for the nobility and the knights
Squire
15-16 yr old boy who was a personal servant to his lord or to another knight in the lords service
Knighting
Complicated ceremony that ended with the tapping of the mans shoulders and neck with a sword
Heraldry
Certain colorful and unique symbols, emblems, and designs displayed on armor, shields, and banners for each noble family
Coat of arms
A family’s distinct display of heraldry
Castles
Heavily fortified dwellings
Manors
Estates that belonged to the nobles that ranged in size from a few hundred to several thousand acres
