Chapter 12 - Maslow Flashcards
Assumptions of Motivation
- Whole person is motivated, requiring a holistic approach (opposite of Freud)
- Motivation is usually complex - several sources can contribute to the eventual appearance of some behavior (sexual union desire)
- Motivated by one need or another - only results in satisfying other needs
- Universally motivated by needs
- Needs can be arranged in hierarchical
Hierarchy of Needs
basic and being needs
Basic = oxygen, food, water — safety
Neurotic Needs
Not productive and lead to pathology. Occurs when individual doesn’t respond well to situation/stimuli when they should create and control the situation. Inhibits personal growth and prevent individuals from reaching self actualization
Self-Actualization “Fully Human”
Accurate perception of reality and accept themselves (even with little guilt/anxiety)
Common characteristics are to be spontaneous, problem-centered, need for privacy/solitude, independent.
Jonah Complex (Meta Needs)
Fear of success which prevents self-actualization, or realization of one’s potential. Fear of one’s own greatness, evasion of one’s destiny, or avoidance of exercising one’s talents.
Maslow’s Therapy
(non traditional clients) believed most people don’t satisfy and pass through the ‘love and belongings’ stage. Clinical relationship is foundation for outside relationships. Aim therapy to decrease the reliance on others and encourage the systemic urge towards psychological growth and self-actualization.
