Diversity

Affirmative Actions
- narrowly focused on demographics such as sex and race
- policy for actively creating diversity
- required in company over 50 employees
- compensate for past discrimination
Why does diversity make good business sense?
- Decreases turnover
- Decreases absenteeism
- Helps companies avoid expensive lawsuits
- Helps companies attract and retain talented workers and diverse customers
- Drives business growth
- Produces higher-quality problem solving
Surface Level Diversity
differences that are immediately observable, typically unchangeable, and easy to measure
Deep Level Diversity
differences that are communicated through verbal and nonverbal behaviors and are recognized only through extended interaction with others.
What is the purpose of shifting to deep level diversity?
coming to know and understand co-workers better can result in reduced prejudice and conflict and it can lead to stronger social integration
What is social integration?
the degree to which group members are psychologically attracted to working with each other to accomplish a common objective, or, as one manager put it, “working together to get the job done.”
What is the affective component of attitude?
The emotional/feeling part
What is the behavioral component?
Intention to behave in a certain way
Cognitive component?
Belief held by individual
Job Involvement component
How active/involved you are in a job
How important job performance is to your self worth
Organizational Commitment
- How closely you identify with organizational goals
- How important staying at the organization is to you
Perceived Organizational Commitment
How much you believe that the organization cares about you and values your work
Cognitive Dissonace
Assumes attitudes drive behavior and that when we do something we don’t agree with we feel uncomfortable
Personality
The unique combination of psychological characteristics (measurable traits) that affect how a person reacts and interacts with others
